Exciting Changes Come to the Letter-Writing Process
Over the years, one of the greatest frustrations expressed by sponsors and their sponsored children has been the length of time it takes to receive letters. And through research we conducted, we learned that parents of children in our sponsorship program prefer their children receive letters over gifts. The parents say letters convey the love of the sponsor in ways gifts cannot.
In order to deepen your relationship with your sponsored children, we know we must speed up the letter-delivery process.
All original letters between sponsors and children will be:
- Digitally scanned
- Sent electronically to and from your child’s country office
- Printed for delivery
Letters from your child will be accessible in the “My Letters” section of My Account, where you can also choose to have the original letters sent to you via hard copy or email. Email letters will arrive a week faster.
These changes will increase the letter delivery process by up to 50 percent and cost less money to implement.

The single most effective way to build a relationship with your sponsored child is through letter writing.
Letter writing can bring together two people from vastly different places and cultures and forge a friendship that is deep and personal. But writing letters to a child in another culture can also be one of the most challenging aspects of being a sponsor.
Letter writing may seem like a novelty in today's world, something fun to do if you’re into that type of thing, but it's through letters, whether they be a quick note or several pages long, handwritten or written online, with or without photos, sent monthly or less frequently, that we send the consistent and deeply personal message, "You matter. I love you. I'm with you." And apart from writing letters, how else are our sponsored children part of our daily lives?
Letter writing is a labor of love, for when we write a letter to our sponsored child we help the children’s emotional, moral and holistic growth by:
- building self-esteem
- encouraging learning
- nurturing dreams
- providing a tangible expression of love
Speak words of hope to a child in poverty.
